Student Success

The recent woven tapestry exhibition held at the Mill House Gallery, Angmering, Sussex was a great success.  It showcased a wide selection of beautiful woven tapestries from artists in the southern region of the British Tapestry Group.    A student of mine, Lindsay Hughes, who only took up woven tapestry a year ago, submitted two pieces.  These were both sold and not surprisingly as they are excellent…

The Cheapside Hoard

This amazing exhibition held at the London Museum until 27th April 2014 is quite magical.   The treasure trove of Elizabethan jewellery had lain hidden for 300 years.   The pieces are surprisingly contemporary and beautifully shown together with paintings and other artifacts relevant to the jewels.  Thoroughly recommended as a source of inspiration.

The Lost Commission

I was delighted to weave a rug commission based on the sunset over my client's home town.  The rug was finished in time for Christmas and for the first time, I decided to send it via MyHermes and paid extra for it to be collected on a Saturday.   The rug never reached its destination and remains missing to this day.  Numerous phone calls (at 10p per minute) were made to the carriers and it was a…

Milland Contemporary Craft Show

Last November's Milland Contemporary Craft Show (near Petersfield, Hampshire)  was a great success.  Now in its 9th year, the event goes from strength to strength, attracting makers of exceptional talent.   We had a record number of visitors this year and raised over £260 for Samaritans from offering home made refreshments throughout the two days for donations. This year's event will be on 22nd…

The Edinburgh Tapestry Studios

It was wonderful to visit Edinburgh during the festival this year and part of the treat was to visit the Dovecote Studios, home of the famous Edinburgh tapestry studios. I recommend a visit as the work is inspirational. We saw the wonderful Fleece to Fibre exhibition which shows how the acclaimed painting by Victoria Crowe was translated into weaving using natural fleece from around the country.

Peg Loom Weaving at the Weald and Downland Museum

It was a pleasure to introduce a new course at the Weald and Downland museum near Chichester, West Sussex.  The morning was spent making peg looms with the help of experienced carpenter Sam Ford.   We then spent the afternoon learning how to weave on them.   All learners were able to take home their own peg looms to continue their weaving and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day.  For more information…

Sistine Chapel Ceiling in Sussex

I was amazed to discover this ordinary church in Goring on Sea in West Sussex with an extraordinary artwork inside.  Artist Gary Bevans painted a copy of the Sistine Chapel ceiling here in the 1980's.  It has to be seen to be believed so I hope you are able to visit it one day.  It took the artist 5 years to complete and is truly inspiring.

Maximo Laura

The work of this amazing Peruvian tapestry weaver is being shown at Denbies winery near Dorking, Surrey until 23rd June.    If you want to be inspired, I thoroughly recommend a visit or if you can't get there, visit Maximo's website   www.maximolaura.com  and prepared to be amazed!
